Product and Price Information

How does Wayfinder Cities™ work?

Wayfinder Cities™ is a pan-European/North American guide that gives you route descriptions from A to B. Unlike Wayfinder Navigator™, it does not use a GPS connection that is necessary for dynamic navigation. Wayfinder Cities™ helps you to find your way around the city with easy to follow text and map instructions.

By entering your starting point as well as the destination (Street address, City, Category) into the program, you can calculate a route. Through the mobile network (GPRS Internet or 3G) you connect to the Internet in order to send the starting point and your destination, to the Wayfinder server. The optimal itinerary is calculated and the server sends this information back to your mobile phone. Via step by step text instructions and maps you can find your way with Wayfinder Cities™

Cost of Use

How much does it cost to use Wayfinder Cities™?

The cost is dependent on the GPRS Internet or 3G subscription you have with your wireless carrier. Most North American wireless carriers have a monthly data plan that includes various amount of MB that can be used per month.

The volume of data needed for the application differs according to the distance of the route, and how much you are using maps. The cost to you depends on how you are using Wayfinder and how much your wireless carrier charges for the Internet connection when downloading information. The cost of connection varies between wireless carriers and you should also be aware that it might cost more to use Wayfinder abroad, as you will connect via another wireless carriers' network. Please check with your wireless carrier for more information both on different payment methods as well as roaming charges.

How can I affect the cost of the Internet connection?

You pay for downloaded data according to the subscription you have, (data volume, time or flat fee). The amount of data the application requires varies according to your use of Wayfinder. The download, zoom and pan in the map requires more data than calculating a route and step-by-step instructions to your destination in the Itinerary view.

Can I use Wayfinder Cities™ abroad?

Yes, the service gives you access to maps of either North America* or Europe**. Before you go abroad, please check with your wireless carrier about its international roaming agreements with other wireless carriers outside your country. Make sure that you choose one of your wireless carrier's roaming partners when you select a network abroad.
* The North American coverage includes Canada and the USA

** The European map coverage includes the following countries: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lichtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Will Wayfinder's applications affect the battery time on my mobile phone?

The background light of the display consumes power, though you can adjust this setting in the Wayfinder application on your phone*.

* Not applicable for Java enabled phones

Maps

What does Vectorized map mean?

The vectorized (dynamic) maps* have no borders. They are continuously downloaded so that you can seamlessly scroll and pan in the map. You can download vectorized maps to your mobile phone from your account at MyWayfinder.com. When using preinstalled maps**, you reduce the amount of data downloaded via GPRS Internet or 3G.

* Vectorized maps are not available for Java enabled phones (
** Preinstalled maps are not available on Java enabled phones

How can I store maps on my mobile phone?

There are two ways to save maps on your phone; you can download and preinstall maps from MyWayfinder.com and you can save the maps you are using while scrolling and panning in the map.

A. Download and preinstall from MyWayfinder.com*:
You can download maps of cities from MyWayfinder.com and transfer them from your PC to your mobile phone via Bluetooth/Infrared or USB-cable. Thereafter, you can install the maps on a memory stick or on the internal memory**. The maps do not have to be installed on the same memory as the Wayfinder application.

* The preloading of maps from MyWayfinder.com is not available on Java enabled phones

**On Motorola A920, A925, A1000 it is not possible to install anywhere else than on the internal memory.

B. Downloading directly from the Wayfinder server via Internet while you are using the map:

Using this method maps are automatically stored when scrolling and panning with the Map View. The map cache remains in the memory after closing the application. When the map cache is full, the maps downloaded first will be removed automatically to be replaced with the most recent downloads. You can decide how much of the memory you want to use to store maps in Settings > Map tab > Map cache. The map cache is stored where you have chosen to install the Wayfinder application, i.e. if you have installed Wayfinder in phone memory, the maps will also be stored in the phone memory. On Java enabled phones the free memory in the Record Management System, RMS of the phone, i.e. the internal memory.

Does map cache data remain in memory after closing down the application?

Yes. The maps downloaded via the Internet will be stored until the map cache is full. If you have chosen a map memory size of, for example 5 MB, when this limit is reached the oldest maps will be replaced by the latest ones downloaded. You will always keep the maps that you have used most recently. You can change map memory size in the application* as follows: Settings > Map tab > Map cache size. If you want to empty the map cache, please set the size to 0, shut down the application and start again. You can now set the map cache to the preferred volume.

* Java enabled phones uses the free memory in the Record Management System, RMS of the phone

Why am I connected to the Internet when I am using preinstalled maps?

You will be connected to the server even when using preinstalled maps. Every time you calculate a route, you need to download that specific information through the Internet. You also have to download to your phone, the itinerary (shown as a red line on the map) and Points of Interest. You will download at 30-60 kB for a one hour route when using preinstalled maps.*

* The preinstalled maps are not available on Java enabled phones

How many maps from MyWayfinder.com can I preinstall on my mobile phone?

On your account at MyWayfinder.com you have access to vectorized (dynamic) maps that you can download to your PC and transfer to your phone. You can have a maximum of 20 cities installed on your phone at any one time.*

* Preinstalled maps are not available on Java enabled phones

How often are the maps updated?

The major map updates take place four times a year, (i.e. when the map supplier provides Wayfinder with its latest maps). In addition to this, Wayfinder continually corrects any errors in the maps that users report. If you notice an error in the map, you are welcome to inform us via your account at MyWayfinder.com (Go to: Service / Report Map Error)

Features - Calculate a Route

No, Wayfinder is made simply to calculate a route from A to B. If you want to have several breaks in between, you can easily use your Favorites setting and calculate a new route from A to B.

What difference will it make if I change my settings between "Passenger Car", "Pedestrian" and "Taxi"?

The difference between "Passenger Car" and "Taxi" is that some roads and turns are only permitted for taxis. If you choose the setting "Pedestrian", the calculated route will exclude motorways but will use one-way streets in both directions, and will only calculate routes within a 6 mile / 10 kilometre radius.

Internet Connection

Why do I need an Internet Connection?

When you search for destinations, calculate a route, or download a map you connect via the Internet to the Wayfinder server. You access the Internet via the mobile phone network GPRS or 3G and therefore you need an Internet subscription with your wireless carrier. Please note that a WAP or WAP-GPRS subscription is not sufficient, you need GPRS Internet or 3G.

What is an Internet Access Point?

An Access Point contains the settings that gives you access to the Internet via a wireless carrier's network. The Wayfinder server can only be connected through GPRS Internet or 3G and therefore you need an Access Point. You cannot access the Wayfinder server with any other Access Point, such as WAP or MMS; it has to be GPRS Internet or 3G Internet. Select the correct Access Point in your Wayfinder application. Go to Settings > Phone tab > Access Point*.

Find the settings as follows:
Phone with Keypad: Press Options > Settings
Phone with Touch screen: Click on Wayfinder to the left of the screen and select Settings

What do I need from my wireless carrier to be able to use the Wayfinder services?

You must have a GPRS Internet or 3G subscription with your wireless carrier in order to access the Internet and download routes, maps and information from the Wayfinder server. Please note that a WAP subscription or a WAP-GPRS subscription is not sufficient. Contact your wireless carrier to find out what their access point for GPRS Internet and 3G is called. Ask them to send you the settings when the service is activated. If the subscription is already activated, you can also configure the Access Point for most phone models at MyWayfinder.com / New Customer / Configure Access Point.

I get the error message "Check your Internet settings". What should I do?

Check that you have chosen the correct Internet Access Point in the Settings of the application; select the Communication tab and scroll down to Access Point. If you still cannot connect to the Internet, please visit MyWayfinder.com and select New Customer / Configure Access Point in order to get the correct settings, or contact the wireless carrier that is responsible for your Internet access.

* Not applicable for Java enabled phones. The Internet Access Point is set from the phone’s settings as described in question X (To Fraser: Could you replace the yellow x here with the number you choose to have on the question :” How do I check my access point on Java enabled phones? ” – thanks!)

Am I connected to the Internet all the time?

Yes and no. Although you may be connected to the Internet, all wireless carriers charge differently for this* costs of downloading data from the server, e.g. while performing a search, calculating a route or downloading a map.

* Most wireless carriers charge for the amount of data that is transferred from the Wayfinder server through the Internet to your phone, but some wireless carriers charge for time connected to the Internet and a third option is to pay a flat fee for a set amount of data. Please check with your wireless carrier for more information on your specific costs.
