Wayfinder Navigator™ FAQs

Product and price information

How does Wayfinder Navigator™ work?

A Bluetooth GPS-receiver pinpoints your position (longitude and latitude) and transmits this information via Bluetooth to your mobile phone. By entering your destination (Street address, City, Category) into the program, you can calculate a route. Through the mobile network (GPRS or 3G) you connect to the Internet in order to send the GPS information, as well as your destination, to the Wayfinder server. The optimal itinerary is calculated and the server sends this information back to your mobile phone. Via step by step voice instructions*, pictures and maps, Wayfinder Navigator™ guides you to your destination**.

*Pure graphical navigation, no voice instructions on certain handset models

** Today we have maps in North America and all of Western Europe and as well as some Eastern European countries. For a full listing of current map coverage.

Cost of use

How much does it cost to use Wayfinder Navigator™?

The cost is dependent on the GPRS Internet or 3G subscription you have with your wireless service provider/carrier. Most North American wireless service providers/carriers have a monthly data plan that includes various amount of MB that can be used per month.

The volume of data needed for the application differs according to the distance of the route, and how much you are using maps. The cost to you depends on how you are using Wayfinder and how much your wireless service provider/carrier charges for the Internet connection when downloading information. The cost of connection varies between wireless service providers/carriers and you should also be aware that it might cost more to use Wayfinder abroad, as you will connect via another wireless service provider’s/carriers' network. Please check with your wireless service provider/carrier for more information on different payment methods as well as roaming charges.

How can I affect the cost of the Internet connection?

You pay for downloaded data according to the subscription you have, (data volume, time or flat fee). The amount of data the application requires varies according to your use of Wayfinder. There are basically three different ways of using Wayfinder Navigator™ that are based on data download in kB per hour of driving, which means a calculated route that takes one hour to drive.

  • Minimum mode - (Guide view) 5-10 kB per hour of driving. Using the application in Guide view, which guides you with high-resolution icons and voice instructions, requires download only of data for the route.
    • Java enabled phone (incl. BlackBerry) Guide view: 25-35 kB per hour of driving
  • Medium mode - (Map view) 30-60 kB per hour of driving. In this mode you navigate with preinstalled maps on your phone. You can select and download (free of charge) city areas from http://www.mywayfinder.com, the travel-planning site available to every Wayfinder user. The preloaded maps are automatically activated when your GPS-position is within the area of those maps. The server will only send you new maps of areas that are not already stored on your phone. You contact the server to calculate the route and to receive an itinerary which appears on the map itself (this explains the download of data when using stored maps).
    • The preloading of maps is not available on Java enabled phones, Blackberry, Windows Pocket PC and Smartphones as of yet ,
  • Flexible mode - (Map view) First time visit to an area: 150-300 kBs per hour of driving (maps are continuously downloaded through the Internet), thereafter for the same area about 30-60 KBs per hour of driving. Once an area has been downloaded, the map information is stored on the phone for future use thus avoiding multiple download of identical data.
    • Java enabled phones, Blackberry, Windows Pocket PC and Smartphones – Are similar to the Flexible mode.
Can I use Wayfinder Navigator™ abroad?

Yes, the service gives you access to maps of either North America* or Europe**. Before you go abroad, please check with your wireless service provider/carrier about its international roaming agreements with other wireless service providers/carriers outside your country. Make sure that you choose one of your wireless service provider’s/carrier's roaming partners when you select a network abroad.
* The North American coverage includes Canada and the USA

** The European map coverage includes the following countries: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lichtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Will Wayfinder's applications affect the battery time on my mobile phone?

Yes, Wayfinder Navigator™ has an active Bluetooth connection that requires some power. The background light of the display also consumes power, though you can adjust this setting in the Wayfinder application on your phone*.

* Not applicable for Java enabled phones (incl. BlackBerry)

Maps

What does Vectorized maps mean?

The vectorized (dynamic) maps* have no borders. They are continuously downloaded so that your position on the map is shown in the middle of the screen. Using vectorized maps while navigating results in downloading 150-300 kB per hour of driving. However, you can also download vectorized maps to your mobile phone from http://www.mywayfinder.com. When using preinstalled maps**, only 30-60 kB per hour of driving are downloaded.

* Vectorized maps are not available for Java enabled phones including BlackBerry
** Preinstalled maps are not available on Windows Mobile and Java enabled phones including BlackBerry

How can I store maps on my mobile phone?

There are two ways to save maps on your phone; you can download and preinstall maps from http://www.mywayfinder.com and you can save the maps you are using while navigating.

A. Download and preinstall from http://www.mywayfinder.com*:
You can download maps of cities from http://www.mywayfinder.com and transfer them from your PC to your mobile phone via Bluetooth/Infrared or USB-cable. Thereafter, you can install the maps on a memory stick or on the internal memory**. The maps do not have to be installed on the same memory as the Wayfinder application.

* The preloading of maps from http://www.mywayfinder.com is not available on Java enabled phones, Blackberry, Windows Pocket PC and Smartphones as of yet

**On Motorola A920, A925, A1000 it is not possible to install anywhere else than on the internal memory.

B. Downloading directly from the Wayfinder server via Internet while you are navigating:
Maps downloaded via the Internet are automatically stored when navigating with the Map View. The map cache remains in the memory after closing the application. When the map cache is full, the maps downloaded first will be removed automatically to be replaced with the most recent downloads. You can decide how much of the memory you want to use to store maps in Settings > Map tab > Map cache. The map cache is stored where you have chosen to install the Wayfinder application, i.e. if you have installed Wayfinder in phone memory, the maps will also be stored in the phone memory. On Java enabled phones (incl. BlackBerry) the free memory in the Record Management System, RMS of the phone, i.e. the internal memory.

Does map cache data remain in memory after closing down the application?

Yes. The maps downloaded via the Internet will be stored until the map cache is full. If you have chosen a map memory size of, for example 5 MB, when this limit is reached the oldest maps will be replaced by the latest ones downloaded. You will always keep the maps that you have used most recently. You can change map memory size in the application* as follows: Settings > Map tab > Map cache size. If you want to empty the map cache, please set the size to 0, shut down the application and start again. You can now set the map cache to the preferred volume.

* Java enabled phones (incl. BlackBerry) uses the free memory in the Record Management System, RMS of the phone

Why am I connected to the Internet when I am using preinstalled maps?

You will be connected to the server even when using preinstalled maps. Every time you calculate a route, you need to download that specific information through the Internet. You also have to download to your phone, the itinerary (shown as a red line on the map) and Points of Interest. You will download at 30-60 kB per hour of driving when using preinstalled maps.*

* The preloaded maps are not available on Java enabled phones, Blackberry, Windows Pocket PC and Smartphones as of yet .

How many maps from http://www.mywayfinder.com can I preinstall on my mobile phone?

On your account at http://www.mywayfinder.com you have access to vectorized (dynamic) maps that you can download to your PC and transfer to your phone. You can have a maximum of 20 cities installed on your phone at any one time.*

* The preloaded maps are not available on Java enabled phones, Blackberry, Windows Pocket PC and Smartphones as of yet .

How often are the maps updated?

The major map updates take place four times a year, (i.e. when the map supplier provides Wayfinder with its latest maps). Apart from that, Wayfinder continually corrects any errors in the maps that users report.

Can I use Wayfinder Navigator™ on water and in the forests/mountains?

The data from the GPS-receiver (co-ordinates and heading) is always available and you can always get a map of the surrounding area, but you cannot calculate a route in areas where there are no roads as the Wayfinder maps are road maps. Wayfinder does not have any nautical charts.

Features - Calculate a route

Can I calculate a route with several stop off points?

No, Wayfinder is made simply to calculate a route from A to B. If you want to have several breaks in between, you can easily use your Favorites setting and calculate a new route from A to B.

Can I make Wayfinder calculate the route according to my own preferences?

Yes, in the settings of your application you can choose to avoid motorways, toll roads and traffic disturbances. If you select "time", the quickest route is calculated and if you select "distance", the shortest route is calculated. "Traffic info"* gives you the quickest route avoiding road works etc. Please find more information about the product Traffic Info on www.wayfinder.com under Products.

* On Java enabled phones including Blackberry, Windows Pocket PC and Smartphones the traffic information is used when calculating a route and will be shown when a route has been calculated. However, it is not available when accessing the map without any route calculated nor are details about the traffic available.

What difference will it make if I change my settings between "Passenger Car", "Pedestrian" and "Taxi"?

The difference between "Passenger Car" and "Taxi" is that some roads and turns are only permitted for taxis. If you choose the setting "Pedestrian", the calculated route will exclude motorways but will use one-way streets in both directions, and will only calculate routes within a 6 mile/10 kilometer radius.

Does Wayfinder Navigator™ offer Speed Camera warnings?

Not in North America at this present time, please visit www.wayfinder.com for further information.

* Most wireless service providers/carriers charge for the amount of data that is transferred from the Wayfinder server through the Internet to your phone, but some wireless service providers/carriers charge for time connected to the Internet and a third option is to pay a flat fee for a set amount of data. Please check with your wireless service provider/ carrier for more information on your specific costs.

Does Wayfinder's application work with WAP?

No, a WAP subscription or a WAP-GPRS subscription is not sufficient to use Wayfinder Navigator™. You need an Internet subscription for GPRS-Internet or 3G from your wireless service provider/carrier in order to access the Wayfinder server.

The GPS receiver

Can I use the included Bluetooth GPS-receiver with other devices?

Yes, it is a generic GPS device that supports the NMEA protocol and can be used with all Bluetooth-enabled devices, such as laptops and PDAs. However, you must have the appropriate software available for the units to work together.

How long is the battery time of the GPS-receiver?

The Wayfinder GPS-receiver has approximately 6 hours battery time. The GPS-receivers is delivered with a car charger, which allows you to charge the battery while navigating.

How accurate is the GPS-receiver?

It is normally accurate to within 10 meters.

Is it possible to use a Bluetooth headset/ hands-free at the same time as Wayfinder Navigator™?

Most mobile phones are currently unable to connect to two Bluetooth devices simultaneously, i.e. they can only communicate with either the Bluetooth GPS or the Bluetooth headset/hands-free. Therefore, you cannot generally use a wireless hands-free set while navigating. However, a limited number of Bluetooth headsets that can connect to two devices are available, for example the Bluetooth car kit Parrot CK3000 which works well with the Nokia 6630. Make sure that you connect it in the correct way:

  • Pair the mobile phone with the car kit
  • Turn the car ignition off
  • Open Wayfinder on the phone
  • Connect the GPS

Start the ignition

Please contact the provider of your Bluetooth car kit/headset about the possibilities of using it with other Bluetooth devices such as Wayfinder.

I have changed my Bluetooth GPS-receiver, why doesn't it connect with the phone?

If the settings are configured to automatic GPS connection, (e.g the application connects to the receiver automatically when starting the program), the phone only recognizes the GPS-receiver that was originally paired with it. When changing GPS-receiver, you must configure these settings again in order to pair the new GPS-receiver with the phone. Go to Settings in the Wayfinder application, select the Phone tab and set the GPS autoreconnect to OFF. Note that on Nokia 9500/9300 and Windows Mobile you need to delete the paired GPS-receiver(?) in the Bluetooth settings that you find in the Control Panel of the phone, instead of changing the settings in the Wayfinder application.

If you have a Java enabled phone (incl. BlackBerry), go to Settings, select the GPS tab and search for available devices, select your new GPS receiver and Wayfinder will automatically connect to this device in the future. Please note that if you have a BlackBerry device, you need to pair the GPS receiver with the phone in order for Wayfinder to find it. Go to the phone’s Settings> Bluetooth and select Add device to pair the devices.

Can I use Wayfinder Navigator™ without being connected to the GPS-receiver?

Yes, if you determine the start point manually as well as the destination, you will get a route description with pictures and maps. You do not get any dynamic voice instructions automatically

Why am I not receiving any voice instructions?

If the GPS-receiver is not connected to the phone or if it is not receiving satellite signals, you will not get any voice instructions. Make sure that your Wayfinder pinpoints your current position before you enter your destination.*

* Some phones have limited functionality and will only have graphical navigation and no voice instructions Please click here for more information.

Why doesn't the Bluetooth connection between the GPS-receiver and the mobile phone work?

The devices must be within 10 metres of each other. Also, please check that you have not connected your mobile phone to another Bluetooth device, e.g. your PC.

Why doesn't the GPS-receiver pinpoint my position?

In order to receive satellite signals, the GPS-receiver must not be obstructed. Put the receiver on the dashboard of your car or, if you are inside, put the GPS-receiver by a window. Also, make sure that you have turned the GPS-receiver on and that the battery is charged.
