Nuuksio National Park is one of Finland's most important and stunning nature reserves. Popular among a wide variety of people, Nuuksio has around 100,000 visitors per year. It consists of the westernmost part of the Nuuksio lake uplands, a large and unique area, home to several rare species of flora and fauna. One of these is the flying squirrel, which has become the park's symbol: this is its most important nesting ground in Europe. Nuuksio is a favourite of Prince Philip, head of the World Wildlife Fund. Nuuksio is packed with stunning scenery: everything from bogs, swamps and ponds to cliffs, dense forests, wide-open vistas, valleys and ravines. There is much to do: fishing, berry-picking, mushroom-collecting, orienteering, hiking, swimming or skiing. Horse-trekking is also offered by certain companies. You can buy food from a nearby café or cook your own at one of the many cooking or campfire spots. If you want to spend the night, choose from four campsites, several lodges and three nearby hotels—Elohovi, Siikaranta or Solvalla. To explore the park on your own, there are four basic routes you can take, with clearly marked paths of varying lengths. Tours are also arranged; guide booking and general information are available at Haukkalampi lodge, open daily in the summer.
