A public park was opened on the island of Korkeasaari in 1884; the acquisition of animals began soon afterwards, and the zoo was officially opened in 1889. It is inhabited by many different animals, from Nordic species (bears, elk, deer, seals) to tropical ones. You will also find African big cats and flamingoes. Korkeasaari also has several rare and endangered species, being famous for its snow leopards. You can visit at any time of year: many of the Arctic species are more active in winter, but summer is perfect for seeing the tropical animals. On occasion they arrange nighttime viewings. The island includes a restaurant, a café, kiosks and picnic tables. There are even crêche services, and you can rent little carts for pulling your children along in.
