Kauppatori was previously dominated by upper-class shoppers, whereas Hakaniemi was dominated by the working classes. Nowadays this has changed, and while many tourists favour Kauppatori, a lot of the locals living in Helsinki regularly go to Hakaniemi marketplace instead.
